Post 10 - The Journey Continues

Post 10 - The Journey Continues

I have told you about my search for a purpose.  This is a journey that has no destination, it continues as long as I live.  That’s the way a purpose is.

I realize that my talent is small, so my purpose is not to change the world.  I have merely been following the signposts, but I know that my writing has helped a few people.

My books about computer systems briefly helped the people using them, but all of those computer systems have become obsolete and none of those books will ever be read again.  My book about an artist explained how the folk craft of carving wooden duck decoys grew into the popular wildfowl art of today, and some people have found that interesting, but I do not foresee any lasting benefit from that.  Its value is entertainment, nothing more.

My book about Chesapeake oystermen helped prevent regulations that would have put them out of business, but money being spent by polluters will keep corrupting legislators, and environmental regulations will be progressively weakened until the oysters are all wiped out by poor water quality.  Those oystermen will disappear, and in one more generation all memories of them will also disappear.  My writing has helped a few people for a few years, but the benefits will not endure.

My writing has been a sometimes frustrating journey along an unpredictable path, but it has certainly been exciting. The signposts led me to Belize, to explore Mayan pyramids and cities that were abandoned a thousand years ago, and to devise a theory for the famous mystery of what happened to those ancient people.  The signposts led me to write a novel about that mystery.

My book about the fall of the mighty Mayan Empire may entertain a few people.  It shows how arrogance and greed brought down the Mayan rulers, but it will not cause people to change.  Eventually, arrogance and greed will probably bring down even the most powerful country in the world, as it has brought down many others throughout history.  The United States of America has already traveled a long way down that road.  I hope it recognizes the signposts and changes direction.

That book about the Mayans may also help some readers discover their purpose.  That is really what I hope to achieve with it.

I know that most of my work will have little effect and will not last long, but I cannot let that bother me.  God does not consider me a failure if I do not create a best seller, he only expects me to follow the signposts he shows me, and I should be happy with that.

          Shouldn’t we all?

This blog is a new path for me, I am now learning to write blogs and I am looking for signposts to tell me if I should continue at it.  You can be a signpost, you can add a comment to this blog.  I’ll look for it.

Meanwhile, I continue my journey.  If you are interested in what I decide to write next, go to:

If you are searching for your purpose, the path God intended for you, I hope you find it, and I hope it starts you on a journey of your own.

 It’s never too late.
